Performance tests and bottleneck analysis in multi-layer architectures

Thesis by Jirk Stolze

This work deals with various aspects of performance analysis in multi-layer architectures. To begin, important terms, such as performance, Black-box, white-box and grey-box tests and load test and stress test explained to subsequent analysis of test procedures or dispositions of auxiliary equipment, such as load test tools, to investigate. Further approaches to clarify how the provision of performance with maximum expressiveness can be carried out.

Another chapter deals with a search of various load test tools and a possible division into certain categories. This division is supported by examples of some load testing tools supported.

It is a difficult decision to determine what testing procedures for certain architectures should be used. The idea of different test methods and their advantages and disadvantages is another chapter in this work.

The theory was developed under the project Campus Management of the Free University of Berlin, the software "SAP Campus Management" was used as a basic software. Carrying out various tests, their evaluation and further processing of data are also described as difficulties encountered in testing in complex multi-layer architecture.
